Origins and Early History

Prehistoric Beginnings

Castle Rock, the volcanic plug upon which Edinburgh Castle stands, has been a site of human habitation for thousands of years. The natural defensibility of the rock, rising steeply about 80 meters above the surrounding landscape, made it an ideal location for early settlers to establish a fortification.

Early Medieval Period
